OKC father killed in crash, 5-year-old son uninjured; police arrest driver for DUI
OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma City man is dead and another man is behind bars following a tragic car crash on Monday.
Police say the 27-year-old victim died after being rear-ended along N.W. 10th St., near Bryant.
The victim died just a couple blocks away from home, right next to his 5-year-old son.
Janae Benton, the victim’s widow, said, “I don’t know what the other person was thinking. I know accidents happen but you can’t bring them back.”
Janae says the victim, Ronald Benton, had taken their 5-year-old son, Jaeron, to McDonald’s to pick up a bite to eat.
Jaeron escaped the crash with only minor injuries but doesn’t fully understand that he’ll never see his dad again.
Janae said, “All my son can do is say, ‘Why didn’t you save him?’ He doesn’t understand there’s nothing I could do.”
After being called to the scene, police arrested 31-year-old Dustin Hall.
Hall told police he had looked down at his phone just prior to the collision, but police claim Hall had also been high on drugs.
“We have a number of factors going on,” said Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow, with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “He’s under the influence and messing with his phone; put those together and it had a very tragic end.”
For her part, Janae hopes Hall is held accountable for her husband’s death, but has already forgiven him for causing the crash.
Janae said, “I forgive him. My husband wouldn’t want me to be sad or mad.”
