How a cow could kill you; FDA taking steps to phase out antibiotics in meat
The FDA is asking animal pharmaceutical companies to no longer allow the drugs to be used for production, like weight gain and loss food.
The antibiotics given to animals are often the same drugs given to humans when they are sick like penicillin.
There’s been concern that animals using antibiotics for production has a direct impact on human resistance to the drugs.
Animals can still be given antibiotics for medical reasons with a veterinarians approval. The drugs will no longer be available to farmers over the counter.
