Oklahoma prison has highest reports of sexual abuse in nation
MCALESTER, Okla. – An Oklahoma prison has the highest reports of sexual abuse in the nation.
According to the 2012 Bureau of Justice statistics, the Mabel Bassett Correctional Center, a women’s prison in McLoud, tops the list.
The report shows more than 15 percent of inmates surveyed at that facility have reported some form of sexual abuse from another inmate.
Despite the high numbers, officials from the Oklahoma Dept. of Corrections did not testify at an annual hearing last week in Washington.
According to a spokesperson from the department, officials decided not to testify because of a lawsuit with 11 women who claim three guards at the prison sexually assaulted them.
