ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.  (NBC) – A boat of fishermen make an unexpected catch off the coast of St. Petersburg.

They say they spotted a dog, swimming for her life in the middle of the Tampa Bay.

No one was in sight, so they pulled her out of the water.

She had a jeweled collar on and appeared to be from a loving home.

It’s believed the dog fell off her owner’s boat in the rough waters and they just didn’t realize she was missing.

Tony Basile said, “Think about being out in the water by yourself all night. Somebody’s gotta find her, get her back.”

The dog was micro-chipped but officials can’t find her owners because the phone number isn’t valid anymore.

Authorities say this serves as a warning to pet owners that just because an animal is micro-chipped doesn’t mean that it will be easy to get them back if your information isn’t updated.
