OKLAHOMA CITY – A local agency is asking drivers to be extra alert when it comes to suspicious activity along the state’s highways and interstates.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is asking motorists to report anyone who is tampering with road signs.
The agency hopes the alert will deter theft or damage to highway signs and other state property.
Drivers are asked to call *55 or other local authorities if they spot anything suspicious.
Authorities say you can also report missing or damaged signs by calling (405) 231-4368.
Officials say the theft of signs can result in drivers missing their exit or severe injuries if yield, stop or other warning signs are missing.
The cost of replacing highway signs can range from $1,000 to $10,000 each depending on size and location.
