The FDA is looking into a chemical found in many sodas that may be dangerous to your health, Consumer Reports says. And no, it’s not sugar (this time).
We are talking about the caramel coloring that makes some soft drinks brown.
Consumer reports found wide levels of the carcinogenic byproduct called 4-MEI
It’s an impurity that forms in caramel coloring during the manufacturing process. In tests, levels of the chemical were unnecessarily high, according to the consumer reports.
The FDA says there is no evidence the levels found in the food supply pose any health risk to people. Studies in animals have shown otherwise.
