Oklahoma senator proposes “Piers Morgan” bill, creates clash with CNN host
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahomans can already openly carry firearms with a permit but one Oklahoma senator doesn’t think that’s enough.
Sen. Nathan Dahm is asking for legislators to give law-abiding citizens the right to carry a firearm without a license.
Flint Pattison said, “Yeah, they’re going to have them anyway, so let the law-abiding citizens carry them also.”
Hope Ryan said, “They need to have training, that’s all I have to say because anybody can pull the trigger. But you know, it takes courage to walk away.”
Senate Bill 1473, also known as the Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms Without Infringement Act, would allow adults to carry firearms in all places currently allowed by law, but it wouldn’t require a gun license to do so.
The Tulsa senator says this would reaffirm Oklahoman’s Second Amendment rights.
Sen. Dahm said, “I believe that Americans have a fundamental given right to self-defense as written in the Constitution.”
He added, “I think Oklahoma government has infringed on that to a degree and especially federal government and it’s time that we reassert those rights.”
But it’s the name of the bill causing a social media firestorm.
The bill has gained the attention of a well-known gun control supporter, whom the bill is named after, CNN Host Piers Morgan.
Morgan reached out to the Oklahoma senator via Twitter on Thursday.
In the tweet, he said, “Hi Senator @NathanDahm – come on my show and debate your new ‘Piers Morgan Act’. If you have the guts.”
Now, Sen. Dahm will appear live with the CNN host on Monday to tell his side of the story.
Dahm said, “The focus should definitely not be on me or Piers Morgan, but it should be on the topic itself of Second Amendment as direct self-defense.”
If approved, Dahm’s legislation would go into effect on Nov. 1, 2014.
