UPDATED: ESPN reporter criticized for reaction to Durant’s response to interview question
UPDATE: 9:40 p.m. ESPN has released a statement from Doris Burke on the interview.
“He just took me by surprise with his reaction – not because he’s a believer, I’m a believer. It was an incredible demonstration of humility in the context of what has been a truly spectacular stretch.”
OKLAHOMA CITY – While many Thunder fans are talking about one of the biggest wins of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s season, others are criticizing an ESPN reporter for her reaction to Kevin Durant’s response to a question.
On Wednesday night, the Thunder beat the Miami Heat in grand fashion with Kevin Durant scoring 33 points.
However, some fans are focusing on Durant’s post-game interview with an ESPN reporter.
When asked what drives him down the court by reporter Doris Burke, Durant replied, “God. That’s all I can say. Jesus Christ.”
Burke laughed, “Okay, thank you. You had nothing to do with it?”
Durant added, “No. It’s all him.”
Burke’s response was a simple statement that sent social media into a tailspin.
Some fans believe Burke was caught off guard but others say they were offended by her reaction because they believe she was laughing at KD’s religious beliefs.
Latosha McCullar said, “I believe that by Durant doing that, he’s standing up for all of us.”
McCullar says she is even more of a Thunder fan after watching the clip.
She added people respond to God in their own way.
She said, “She hurried up and got off the microphone with him. Maybe she doesn’t worship God the way we worship God. Everyone doesn’t worship God the same.”
Guillermo Rivera said, “This is a good eye opener.”
Rivera, who is a local pastor, said there’s a lesson to be learned when the topic of God comes up in the media.
He said, “If God is ever brought up, I need to be a little more informed than to just provide a smirk or a laugh, to be able to make a more informed comment or response.”
NewsChannel 4 received a statement from Burke that said, “He just took me by surprise with his reaction, not because he’s a believer, I’m a believer. It was an incredible demonstration of humility in the context of what has been a truly spectacular stretch.”
