ARVADA, Colo. (NBC) – A teenager is safe after an 18 hour hostage situation came to an end in Colorado.
Police were called to a home in the Arvada area around 5:30 p.m. Monday when they received a call about a domestic dispute.
As officers arrived, the man involved in the dispute fled the scene and ran into another home in the same neighborhood.
The suspect barged into that home and took a teenage boy hostage.
His mother and brother were just coming home when the situation unfolded.
Negotiations continued throughout the night and ended Tuesday morning when SWAT members shot and killed the suspect through the front door.
Chief Don Wick, with the Arvada Police Department, said, “The situation was resolved when the suspect went to the front door to retrieve some items we were delivering and the SWAT team took a shot at the suspect, striking him and we were then able to rescue the hostage.”
According to police, the suspect and the hostage did not know each other.
