Workers stumble upon 1,000 corpses while trying to create parking lot
JACKSON, Miss. – While trying to expand, workers at a medical school in Mississippi made a gruesome discovery.
According to the Clarion Ledger, workers building a parking garage at Mississippi Medical Center found the bodies of more than 1,000 people.
The bodies were believed to be those of patients from the “Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum.”
According to the Clarion’s website, medical school officials wanted to use other property to build onto the dental school.
However, other bodies may be nearby including some that date back to the Civil War.
The asylum opened in 1855 and eventually played a role in the battle for Jackson during the Civil War in 1863.
