SOCHI, Russia – Officials are reporting a big shake up in men’s figure skating today.

The Russian Olympic champion Yevgeny Plushenko has ended his Olympic career early.

He withdrew from the men’s event just before he was to skate Thursday for “medical reasons,” NBC reported.

NBC Olympics reported Plushenko was holding his lower back during warm-up.

When his name was called to skate, he went to the judges with what was surly a very difficult decision.

Olympic officials announced to the crowd “Yevgeny Plushenko cannot participate due to a trauma (injury).”

According to the USA Today, the 31-year-old Olympian has a history of back issues.

It reported he has screws in his back from a 2013 surgery.

After that Plushenko skated to the center of the rink and bowed to the arena before waving farewell to the fans.

NBC reported Plushenko won his fourth Olympic medal Sunday when he helped Russia triumph in the inaugural team competition.
