Emergency crews respond to Okmulgee after reported suspicious substance

OKMULGEE, Okla. – In a precautionary move and in accordance with all emergency guidelines, personnel with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Emergency Management Department isolated the Executive Building this morning after a suspicious substance was discovered in an envelope mailed to the tribe.

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Police Department, Okmulgee Fire Department, Okmulgee County EMS, Muskogee Fire Department Regional Response Hazmat Team and the FBI were all notified immediately following the discovery.

MCN Emergency Management Supervisor James Nichols stated that a collaborative effort between all agencies resulted in an efficient and expedient resolution to the situation.  The Hazmat team tested the substance on site and determined it to be nonhazardous.

The FBI continues its investigation regarding the origin and persons involved.  The campus was not completely evacuated, however, 13 employees and a citizen inside the building were required to stay during the inspection to assure their safety.
