UPDATE: Man that woke up in body bag at funeral home passes away
LEXINGTON, Miss. (CNN) – The Mississippi man, who was declared dead, and woke up inside a body bag at a funeral home has officially passed away two weeks later.
Walter Williams made headlines when he was first pronounced dead on February 26 before waking up from his body bag.
Sheriff Willie March, with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department, said, “I stood there and watched them put him in a body bag and zipped it up.”
The coroner says he checked the man’s pulse around 9 p.m. the night before and pronounced Williams dead after he couldn’t detect a heartbeat.
According to WAPT, Eddie Hester was mourning the loss of his uncle when he received an unexpected phone call.
Hester said, “That was at 10:30 and at 2:30, my cousin called me and said, ‘Not yet.’ And I said, ‘What do you mean ‘not yet?’ He said, ‘Daddy’s still here.”
After the coroner helped move Williams to the funeral home, workers were getting ready to embalm him when he began to move.
Byron Porter, the funeral home’s manager, said, “He was not dead, long story short.”
Paramedics rushed Williams to the hospital, where his family was waiting.
