Pope announces new Church view on same-sex civil unions
The Pope went on to mention that civil unions provide financial and medical security.
According to reports, when Pope Francis was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he was a supporter of civil unions for same-sex couples.
Last June, Pope Francis announced that the church should not interfere in the spiritual lives of gays and lesbians.
Although same-sex unions are still contested by the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has sought to set a more tolerant tone.
