OKLAHOMA CITY – We are learning more information about a Oklahoma City man who was involved in a seven hour standoff with police.
Brian Christopher Gass is in the Oklahoma County Jail, and now new details are emerging about his past and what lead up to his intense encounter with the law.
“I looked out my window, and there was a policeman with a gun,” Barbara Johnson said.
They were everywhere. Officers were camped out inside Johnson’s garage. Entire city blocks were shut down as tac teams and bomb squads zeroed in on Brian Gass.
Johnson is his next door neighbor.
“I thought if he breaks out where would he come,” she said.
The windows of his home are broken and the front door kicked from a police effort to move in and arrest him after waiting him out for hours. Tuesday night while that was going on, police called his parents to ask if he had any weapons inside his home.
When NewsChannel 4 talked with his parents Wednesday afternoon, they had no idea a standoff had even occurred.
They admitted Gass and his girlfriend has been fighting, and just a few weeks ago police were called to his home after he kicked her our.
Neighbors confirm she was crying outside after being locked outside.
NewsChannel 4 obtained the police report for that incident. In it the victim called Gass “a functioning alcoholic” and said he told her to “get the f*** out” of his house. A week later police say the couple’s fighting escalated to the standoff.
“I was more nervous than I was anything else, because they said don’t be near the windows,” Johnson said.
His girlfriend told investigators Gass had held her at gunpoint inside for two days which is how long his employer says he has not been to work.
His parents admit Gass has a drinking problem, but they say he is not violent. Oklahoma City Police say they have arrested Gass numerous times for several different crimes in the past.
