Organization trying to keep artifact out of 9/11 museum

NEW YORK – An atheist organization is trying to keep a 9/11 artifact out of the National September 11 Memorial Museum.

A cross-shaped steel beam is at the center of the debate on whether it is considered a religious symbol, or a historical display.

After the terrorist attacks, many found comfort in the beam that was discovered among the wreckage.

The group “American Atheists” states that this beam is a religious symbol and has been fighting to keep the “miracle cross” from being included in the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Last year, a judge ruled against the group saying that the cross demonstrates “how those at Ground Zero  coped with the devastation.”

After the judges ruling, they took the request to the appeals court to be heard again.

The atheist group stated that having this cross in the museum would diminish the contribution of non-Christian emergency workers that participated in the rescue and recovery efforts.

While the group states that beam is a religious symbol, many argue that the beam is still an artifact that is part of history.
