OKLAHOMA – Oklahoma State recovered from a slow start in the opening minutes and went on to blow out Texas Tech 80-62 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Tech scored the first eight points of the game, then OSU responded with a 22-4 run to take control.
The Cowboys defense gave the Red Raiders problems and sparked the run, led by five first half steals from Marcus Smart.
Two of those led to Smart layups and he converted both into three-point plays.
OSU led 46-23 at halftime, and Tech never got closer than 16 in the second half.
Markel Brown had 20 points to lead the Cowboys and hit three 3-pointers.
Smart had 18 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals.
Phil Forte scored 14 points and hit four 3-pointers, while Le’Bryan Nash added 10 points.
OSU forced 17 turnovers in the game, taking two of three from the Red Raiders for the season.
The Cowboys will play top seed Kansas in the quarterfinals Thursday at 2:00.
Oklahoma tips off play in the Big 12 quarterfinals Thursday at 6:00 against Baylor, which beat TCU 76-68 in the late game Wednesday night.
