In Your Corner: One ring scam

OKLAHOMA CITY - There’s a phone scam targeting your wallet.

It's called the one ring scam.

You see a missed call, but the caller never leaves a voicemail.

When you call the number back, the scammer hits your phone bill with a $19.95 charge.

The longer you stay on the line the more charges you rack up.

Scammers call from what appears to be a U.S. number, using area codes like 809, 876 and 284.

Those area codes are actually the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the British Virgin Islands.

Your best defense is to educate yourself and routinely check your phone bill.

The In Your Corner bottom line:

  • Don't return a call you don't recognize.
  • If someone is really trying to get a hold of you they'll call back.
