The #2 seed Oklahoma City University Stars held off the top-seed in the tournament, Freed-Hardeman (TN) 80-76 to win the NAIA women’s basektball national championship Tuesday night in Frankfurt, KY. For the Stars, it’s the school’s 7th national title in the last 10 years…can you say “dynasty”???
OCU was led by California junior guard Yvonte Neal who had a MONSTER game with 36 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. OCU took a 43-37 halftime lead before Freed-Hardeman closed the gap to a single point with less than 3-minutes remaining. Senior guard Kayla MacKenzie scored 21 points as the perimeter duo combined to sink NINE three-point shots.
The Stars got some help from their bench too, outscoring the Tennessee team 15-0 from the reserves, to claim another national title banner to hang inside the beautiful Abe Lemons Arena on the OCU campus at 23rd and Blackwelder.
Congratulations to coach Latricia Trammell and the OCU Stars, national champions again. We hope to have some of the premier plays on NewsChannel 4 tonight at 10:20pm.
