You don’t have to buy a ticket to New York or Paris to get a glimpse of the future of style- Oklahoma Fashion week is here! With many activities this week leading up to a runway finale Saturday evening, there’s something to interest everyone.
Activities began Sunday with a media event held at the Mercedes-Benz of Oklahoma City showroom. Guests and media mingled with the organizers, members of the fashion community, and Fashion Week models.
Christina Fallin opened the event, introducing Major General (Retired) Rita Aragon, the current Oklahoma Secretary of Military and Veteran Affairs. General Aragon spoke of the entrepreneurial spirit Fashion Week encourages as well as bringing Oklahoma into the spotlight as a “predictor” of fashion in the future.
Governor Mary Fallin also took to the stage to tout the economic and cultural development Fashion Week provides. Activities like Oklahoma Fashion Week, now in its second year, enhance the quality of life and also make Oklahoma City, and the state as a whole, more attractive.
Oklahoma designer Stella Thomas will be showing her latest collection Saturday evening and has promised a runway show full of surprises. Designs from her past collections were also worn Sunday afternoon by Fashion Week models. Thomas, a native of Malaysia, now calls Stillwater home and is working diligently to help move Oklahoma into a place of recognition for its contributions to the fashion world.
Not just a runway show, Oklahoma Fashion Week will include events every day this week, giving designers more networking opportunities and attendees more insight into the business that is fashion. We spoke to Vanity Perkins, wife of Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kendrick Perkins who shared her excitement for the events of the week. Her only problem, she hasn’t decided what to wear Saturday night!
A portion of proceeds from Saturday evening’s ticket sales will go to the Genesis Project, a local nonprofit serving abused and neglected boys in care of the Oklahoma DHS.
Oklahoma Fashion Week promises to be full of style and fun and we hope to see you there!
