SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Students, parents, and teachers are standing up for a teacher who tackled a teen in his classroom.

According to KTLA, multiple bystanders recorded the physical confrontation between Mark Black, a science teacher and wrestling coach, and the unidentified student.

Neither Black or the student were seriously injured in the fight.

Students say the altercation was sparked by a conflict over drugs.

Superintendent Sandra Lyon said the teacher was placed on leave, pending the outcome of an independent investigation.

Since the incident, a Facebook page titled “We Support Coach Black of Samohi” has received nearly 19,000 “likes.”

The altercation raises questions about when and how school staff members should intervene when students pose a threat.
