OKLAHOMA CITY – Martin Park Nature Center, 5000 West Memorial Road, is hosting a party for the planet on Saturday, April 12 from 1-4 p.m. during Earth Fest, an eco-friendly family festival part of the City’s Earth Month activities.

Ecology education exhibits, a rain barrel workshop and raffle, alternative fuel cars, kids’ activities, plus a special outdoor art exhibition are part of the earth-friendly fun.

Education programs include:

Eco-enthusiasts of all ages can enjoy a wide range of interactive education booths and displays where local experts will share information on aquaponics, composting with worms, bee hive management and “Blue Thumb” water testing.

Participants can also learn to dye fabrics with the sun, and how to take part in online groups to track and monitor migrating bird and insect species. In addition, the City’s Fleet Management office will exhibit their CNG and electric-powered vehicles.

Kids Activities:

Kids can participate in a variety of earth-friendly activities including making terrariums and flower pots from recycled materials, as well as making bagel birdfeeders and water cycle bracelets. They can then test their recycling know-how during the recycle relay race.

Mother Nature and Terry the Trashasaurus from OKC Beautiful will tell children about the effects of litter on our planet, while Cycler the Robot from Waste Management will talk about how to recycle at home. The City’s own Wayne Drop will hand out information about keeping the City’s waterways pollution-free.

Art Exhibition:

A trek through the Martin Park woods may turn up some unique species of mushrooms crafted by local artist Leigh Martin. Martin is installing three works of knit fiber fungi that will be displayed in the park throughout April. Visitors will be challenged to find these special works along the Martin Park trails.

Rain Barrel Give-Away and Rain Barrel-Making Workshop:

During Earth Fest, the City’s Storm Water Quality office will raffle off a FREE rain barrel to one lucky citizen. The drawing will be held at 3:00 p.m., and the winning registrant must be present and able to take the rain barrel with them.
