OKLAHOMA CITY - What started as a family party at a metro park ended as a crime scene.
Gunfire sent hundreds of people dodging bullets and taking cover. One victim is recovering at the hospital.
It happened at Washington Park near NE 4th and High Ave.
Residents living nearby said it looked like a barbeque gone horribly wrong.
Everyone was having a good time and then all of sudden there was chaos.
Jeremy Bueckers says, “Then the d.j., because they had a little d.j. table set up said `Everybody get out of here!` and they just took off.”
Bueckers lives across the street from Washington Park. He says he heard five or six gun shots and then saw people running and speeding off in their cars in all different directions.
Lt. Arthur Gregory says, “It was fairly chaotic when officers got here.”
Officers tried to gather information from party-goers but were told no one saw anything.
Even one victim who was shot says he has no clue where it was all coming from.
“I don’t know if this was an intended victim of the shooting or if he just happened to be an innocent bystander that just happened to be at the park and be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” says Lt. Gregory.
Bueckers says family gatherings are not unusual to Washington Park, but violence is.
“I think it was just a barbeque. This is the first time I`ve heard people having a party back there this year,” says Bueckers. “During the summertime there are a lot of gatherings, a lot of sporting events.”
He is still trying to wrap his head around seeing a party outside of his back window one minute and then crime scene tape the next.
“There were people having a good time,” says Bueckers. “And all of a sudden they were not.”
In the chaos one woman was stuck by a vehicle, but she is expected to be okay.
Officers do not have any suspect information at the moment, but we'll keep you updated.
