OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s been more than a decade of battles to save the historic gold dome in the Uptown 23rd District.
In 2001, picketers saved the architectural treasure, then after going into foreclosure last year, an energy and environmental business bought the building to preserve it.
News Channel 4 got a sneak peak inside of the gold dome, as organizers get ready to launch a community event called Uptown Uncorked Thursday, April 17th from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
“For this building to be saved, I think it’s an iconic building on 23rd,” said Matt Ralls, Uptown 23rd District Association.
The landmark sits right at the intersection of Northwest 23rd and Classen Boulevard.
TEEMCO, a total energy and environmental company, purchased the building, to be its new headquarters.
“It’s just that tranquility. We’ve got a mixture of water and air,” said Adam Warmuth, TEEMCO.
This transformation project is just one of many along 23rd street, all geared to help improve the appearance and livability.
Through events like Uptown Uncorked at the gold dome, organizers are hoping to attract even more people to the area with drinks and food.
“We have 13 different restaurants from Uptown 23rd that are all going to be featuring different items that you can come and taste,” said Camden Chitwood, Emerson Events.
Plus prizes through raffles and silent auctions, and you can’t forget the wine.
“We brought in various selections of wines from all around the world. Especially from Italy, Argentina and California, so people will get to sample over about 25 different wines,” said Blake Cody, Byron’s Liquor Warehouse.
Through Open Streets OKC, The Rise coming soon and now the Gold Dome’s return, it looks like the Uptown 23rd Street District, is getting a major facelift.
“Over the next couple of years, we’re going to see this entire district transform, a district where friends and family can walk up and down the street,” said Ralls.
Uptown Uncorked is on Thursday, April 17th from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. inside the TEEMCO gold dome.
