OKLAHOMA CITY – The Thunder will surely clinch the #2 seed in the NBA’s Western Conference, so what then? The Thunder hosts Detroit in the regular season finale Wednesday night at “The Peake” and if OKC wins, they’ll clinch second place behind San Antonio.
But if the Los Angeles Clippers lose a home game tonight against Denver, the Thunder will be the #2 seed as well.
If the Clips lose to Portland Wednesday night, even if OKC loses to the Pistons, the Thunder will be runner-up to the Spurs in the West.
So given that 90-95% chance OKC will be the #2 seed, who will they meet in the opening round of the NBA playoffs which start this weekend?
The answer should come in simple form: the winner of Wednesday night’s game in Memphis between the Grizzlies and the Dallas Mavericks.
The winner of that clash will wrap up the #7 seed in the West and that team always plays #2 in the standings.
Surely Memphis takes care of business on their home floor, right?
I can hear Mr. Corso saying right now, “not so fast my friend!” Why? Because Memphis is 0-3 against Dallas so far this season. And if I’m guessing correctly, Thunder fans (like me) would definitely prefer OKC to duel with Dallas to open the post-season than the mean men from Memphis.
Since both Dallas and Memphis have already clinched playoff spots, will one team be more motivated to win Wednesday’s game than the other club?
Memphis eliminated the Thunder in 5 games last season, winning the last 4 in-a-row.
The two teams don’t like each other at all.
I would think, as match-ups go, Memphis would love to win so they can have a best-of-7 game shot at their nemesis from OKC again.
For one night anyway, I’ll be a fan of the Dallas Mavericks. What say you?
