CHICKASHA, Okla. – A wild chase ended in a crash and the suspect jumping into a creek to try to swim away from authorities.
While on duty, a supervisor at the Chickasha Police Department noticed a familiar face drive by, and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and had no valid driver’s license.
He is also a convicted felon.
He has quite the history with local police and immediately ended up leading them on one crazy ride.
“Before he could even turn the lights on, the suspect was already going,” Chickasha Assistant Police Chief Elip Moore said. “He was already running.”
This isn’t the first time this suspect has led police on a chase.
In fact, it’s his sixth – three with the officer who was chasing him in this case.
Keith Thornburg is behind the wheel.
NewsChannel Four has done a story about him before.
Back in 2012, the sheriff said he was the most wanted man in the county and was in trouble in the past for assault and battery as well as rape, kidnapping, drugs and child porn.
This time around he’s not giving up easily – zigzagging up and down neighborhood streets, dust flying through alleys.
At one point Thornburg races right through a group of children.
Another time he guns it through oncoming traffic.
Finally he crashes.
Moore said, “Right after the vehicle crashes into the train tracks here, he actually runs and jumps into a creek.”
Thornburg tries to escape and dives head first into a creek that is eight feet deep.
Ivan Couch lives next to that creek and was listening to the chase on his scanner.
“Seems like in no time they were here,” he said.
Then Couch ran outside to watch.
Couch said, “He comes across the creek here, and he’s running up through there, and that cop got him at gun point right there on the ground.”
Another officer races in for back up, but when he sees the chase has gone underwater, he stops short of the creek.
“I ain’t going in there,” he said.
Thornburg swam across and was arrested.
The passenger in the car surrendered immediately.
Moore said, “In the passengers side over here we found a machete sitting in the floor. Thought that was odd.”
In the end, nobody was hurt.
“I thought it was pretty wild,” Couch said.
Thornburg was booked into jail and is facing several charges.
