Hundreds gather to remember the Chernobyl disaster

Capture

It has been 28 years since Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Ukrainians marked the anniversary today with a vigil in the capital Kiev.

The nuclear disaster killed 30 people and hundreds of thousands of people had to be evacuated from their homes as radioactivity spread across Europe.

People gathered around a memorial in Kiev to participate in a commemorative prayer service.

They held candles and laid flowers in memory of the victims.

A bell also tolled once for each year since the disaster struck.

Many of those attending were former workers at the plant themselves, while others there lost family members.
