ENID, Okla. – One man is in custody after leading police on a chase and allegedly attempting to shoot a police officer.
Authorities say Enid Police Officers Robert Fleer and Dustin Fitzwater pulled over an Expedition after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign.
When Officer Fitzwater approached the vehicle to make contact with the driver, the driver drove off.
Fitzwater says he overheard frantic yelling from a female passenger inside the vehicle as the driver sped away.
The two officers activated their lights and siren and began to pursue the Expedition.
After several minutes, the Expedition crashed into a ditch.
Enid Police say when Officer Fleer exited his patrol unit to check on the occupants of the vehicle, the driver exited the Expedition and pointed a handgun at the officer’s face.
According to authorities, it appeared as if the driver was attempting to fire the gun, but it failed to fire.
Officer Fleer then tackled the suspect while he still had the firearm in his hand.
The driver resisted arrest as the officers attempted to place him into handcuffs.
The two police officers say they were able to remove the gun from the suspect’s hand after gaining control of him and placed him into handcuffs.
According to officials, neither officer was hurt during the altercation.
The suspect is convicted felon Johnny Ross, 21, from Enid, Oklahoma.
After running a records check, authorities discovered Ross had an oustanding county warrant.
The female passenger inside the vehicle told officers that she continued to scream at Ross during the pursuit, asking him to let her out of the vehicle.
Ross was booked into the Garfield County Detention Center on two counts of attempted murder on a police officer, eluding, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, kidnapping, resisting arrest, running a stop sign, driving under suspension, possession of marijuana and a Garfield County warrant for possession with intent.
