DEL CITY, Okla. - Police in Del City are investigating the bizarre disappearance of a 5-year-old Wednesday morning.
The little boy safely returned home but not before 37-year-old Carmen McDonald found him and took him home to feed him.
Maj. Jody Suit, with the Del City Police Department, says, “We’re still scratching ours trying to figure what the whole story is because it is a peculiar case.”
The 5-year-old boy wandered right out of his family's apartment, crossing a busy street to a nearby convenience store, but his journey was cut short by McDonald.
“She was under the influence of something,” says Maj. Suit. “Nothing that she has told the officers or detectives has been logical, that would make sense for any reason to do what she did.”
As officers were setting up a search grid for the 5-year-old, they saw McDonald walking with him toward the convenience store.
She told police she took him home for a bite to eat, keeping him for more than an hour.
“She was not known to the family,” says Suit. “So there was no logical reason for her to have taken this child.”
DHS is now involved to help straighten out how a 5-year-old made his way out the door so easily.
"The mother said she'd last seen him at 11 last night and another relative said they thought they saw him on the couch at five something in the morning,” says Suit. “Nobody could say with confidence when they last saw him.”
Officers have taken the boy to the hospital, not knowing what could have happened in that hour and a half.
McDonald was arrested for public intoxication and investigators are considering child endangerment charges.
