CALIFORNIA – A gunman went on a drive-by shooting rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara campus Friday night, leaving seven people dead including the suspect.
It happened in the beachside community of Isla Vista, where students live.
Sheriff Bill Brown say the gunman exchanged gunfire with deputies before crashing a black BMW into a parked vehicle.
The sheriff says he’s not sure whether the suspect was shot by deputies or if his wound was self-inflicted.
The shootings took place at several sites in town, leaving behind nine crime scenes.
Investigators are looking at a YouTube video in connection with the shooting, showing a young man describing plans to shoot women.
The sheriff says the video suggests the shootings were “premeditated mass murder.”
The alleged gunman has not yet been identified by authorities.
The university has released a statement saying it has been notified that several students were taken to hospitals.
Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun at the scene.
According to NBC News, the suspected gunman in the deadly Southern California rampage has been identified by a family attorney as Elliot Rodger.
