Tide Homers Past Sooners in WCWS

Alabama got a pair of home runs to beat Oklahoma 6-2 in the opening round of the Women’s College World Series at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City on Thursday night.

In a rematch of the 2012 WCWS Finals, Alabama fell behind by a run on two occasions, tying it once and then taking the lead the next time for good.

The Sooners struck first with a solo home run from Shelby Pendley in the first inning.

Alabama answered in the bottom of the second inning, as Marisa Runyon singled home a run to tie the game at 1-1.

Oklahoma took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning on an Alabama error.

Callie Parsons got hung up in a rundown at first base, but a wild throw to second base went into left field, allowing Erin Miller to come around from second base and score to give the Sooners a 2-1 lead.

Alabama took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as freshman Peyton Grantham belted a 3-run home run to left center field to put the Crimson Tide on top 4-2.

Alabama extended the lead in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Jadyn Spencer to take a 6-2 lead and knock OU starting pitcher Kelsey Stevens out of the game.

Crimson Tide senior pitcher Jaclyn Traina struck out nine Sooners on the night and gave up just one hit and one earned run.

Oklahoma drops to the losers’ bracket and will play Louisiana-Lafayette in an elimination game on Saturday at about 1:30 pm.

Alabama will face Southeastern Conference rival Kentucky in the winners’ bracket Friday night at about 8:30 pm.

The Sooners will have to win two games on Saturday and two on Sunday to get back to the WCWS Finals for the third year in a row.
