SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – A six-time Olympic gold medalist is in the hospital after a horrific accident.

According to CNN, swimmer Amy Van Dyken-Rouen was in an ATV crash in Arizona on Friday.

Her family says the crash completely severed her spinal cord.

A helicopter rushed her to a hospital where doctors worked to stabilize her.

Her spinal cord was severed at the T-11 vertebrae, and doctors say a broken vertebrae came within millimeters of rupturing her aorta.

Her family says the swimmer has a long road ahead of her, but her attitude has been overwhelmingly positive.
