ENID, Okla. – A tragic rafting accident claims the life of an Oklahoma man.
On Tuesday, 48-year-old Van Hodges was rafting with family and friends along the Arkansas River.
The group’s raft hit a patch of rough water, causing five of the seven people on board to be thrown into the water.
Four people were helped back into the raft, but family members couldn’t immediately find Hodges.
Authorities with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office say he was pulled under water for several minutes by the river’s strong currents.
He was eventually pulled to shore by rescuers but could not be revived.
All rafters were wearing helmets and personal flotation devices.
