Put down the bacon: Processed meat linked to higher risk of heart failure, death in men
Eating a lot of bacon, cold cuts and hot dogs may increase the risk for severe heart problems in men.
A large study in Sweden followed the dietary habits or nearly 40,000 men for 12 years.
Those who ate the most processed red meat, like salami and sausage, had a 28% increased risk for heart failure compared to men who ate the least.
They were also more likely to die of heart failure.
Experts say the sodium, nitrates and other food additives in processed red meat may be the culprit.
