Love to tan? New research says you could be addicted

A new study suggests it is possible to be addicted to tanning.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital exposed mice to a daily dose of UV radiation for six weeks.

After a week of exposure researchers found evaluated endorphin levels in the mice.

Those are “feel good” hormones that have an impact similar to heroin and the levels in mice after one week were high enough to blunt their sensation of pain.

When the trial ended the mice were given a drug to block the feel-good hormones- and they experienced symptoms of withdraw and would not return to the areas where they had been given the drug.

While the study is in mice, researchers say it proves UV exposure could trigger addictive behaviors.
