Chula Vista, CA (KSWB) — A multimillion-dollar yacht burned for hours Thursday at a California boatyard as firefighters poured thousands of gallons of water on the blaze to prevent it from spreading to other boats.
According to KSWB, workers at the boat yard evacuated when flames began pouring out of the Polar Bear, a steel-hulled yacht powered by twin Caterpillar engines.
The yacht owner told NBC 7 it took him five years to build the $24 million yacht. He also said it has only been in the water for three years.
What caused the boat to catch fire has yet to be determined, but workers speculated that it may have been sparked by someone working in the boat with a welding torch.
According to Mashable, a local boat captain captured footage of the yacht fire using a DJI Phantom quadcopter with a GoPro camera attached.
