MIDWEST CITY, Okla - Police are now investigating a house fire Saturday in the 1400 block of Maple Dr. as a homicide.
Crime tape circling the home made it clear to neighbors that the man and woman who lived next door did not accidentally die in the fire.
"It's just terrible. That's all I know. I couldn't handle it. I know that," said Barbara Johnson.
Police Chief Brandon Clabes can't yet reveal how the couple died.
"There's evidence at the scene that obviously directs us toward suspicious death, information we can't release at this time because only the perpetrator would know as the cause or manner of death. The Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's Office still has the bodies. Positive ID has not been made," said Chief Clabes.
He says one of his officers was the first to pull up to the house Saturday morning when the fire sparked.
"He was able to kick the front door in, but the smoke and heat was too intense for him to enter the residence," said Chief Clabes.
When fire fighters arrived, they found the bodies.
Investigators interviewed neighbors but still need more leads.
"It's very concerning. It's scary," said Johnson.
Police have notified potential victims' family members.
They are waiting on the ME to confirm the names.
