Dad drives daughter to fight other teens, accused of beating boy with crowbar
NEW YORK – A New York man accused of beating up a 17-year-old boy with a crowbar says he was only protecting his daughter.
But police don’t believe his story.
45-year-old Richard Ortiz appeared in court Wednesday.
Police say he drove his daughter and three of her friends to a park to fight another girl last week – and assaulted the boy after he tried to step in.
But Ortiz’s wife says he didn’t drive them to the park.
She claims he only showed up afterward to protect his daughter from getting attacked.
“And this girl came out swinging with that bat and she was swinging at everybody that was there. He was just trying to tell this kid hold your girl, hold your girl. He thought that if anything when they saw an adult that these kids were going to try to maybe pull back and show some respect, but not at all. They went full force,” Nadya Ortiz said.
Ortiz pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault.
His bail was set at $20,000.
The 17-year-old victim is recovering from his injuries.
