LIBERTY, Mo. (KCTV) – Prosecutors say a 23-year-old woman was convicted of trying to poison her twin daughters by putting rubbing alcohol into their sippy cups along with some milk.

Authorities say Gloria Jones was convicted of two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

In 2012, her infant daughters were hospitalized for poisoning.

Police say the twin 1-year-old girls had ingested the rubbing alcohol and one of them was near death.

According to court documents, Jones told detectives she poured rubbing alcohol into their sippy cups because she was feeling overwhelmed.

According to KCTV, she said she thought it would help them calm down because they were “whiny.”

“Rubbing alcohol can be lethal in doses as low as eight ounces in adults. It doesn’t take much to put a child at risk; one of the twins had to be placed on a ventilator,” said Daniel White, the Clay County prosecutor.

Jurors suggested Jones be given five years in prison for the crime.
