NORTH CAROLINA – A North Carolina man wrote to his local paper, admitting that he’s looked at other women during his 61-year marriage.
“I had taken her home and before she got out of the car, I said Gail will you marry me. That was it? That was it. Hahaha. How’s that for romantic?,” said Bob Phillips.
In 61 years that might have been the one and only time, “That’s it and she hesitated a moment.”
Bob wasn’t romantic.
“And then she said oh well it’s probably the best offer I’ll get…”
“I did not.”
Little did Gail know back then, just what an offer she’d accepted.
“My years with her have been for better or for worse, but worse with her is better than better with anybody else,” said Bob.
Those are his words, and they come from his heart.
Bob has never had a problem sharing his feelings about his wife. This year on their anniversary, he shared in the Charlotte Observer, a confession.
“I look at newspaper pictures of new brides every Sunday,” Bob read from the first line of his letter to the newspaper. “I’m searching… I want to see if there is now or ever will be a bride as lovely as you are. Been doing that since June 27, 1953.”
He knows every word by heart. Because they are about his heart.
As for the brides he’s searched every Sunday for 61 years – not a one yet has been as lovely as his. But, “I found two that came close,” said Bob.
It just so happens Bob and Gail have two beautiful daughters, who he thinks are just as beautiful.
