Customers believe 3-year-old’s death in McDonald’s parking lot could have been prevented

OKLAHOMA CITY – A mom and her 3 and 4-year-old boys were in the crosswalk of a McDonald’s parking lot, when the 3-year-old broke free of mom’s hands, putting him in front of a black SUV that didn’t see him coming.

It happened near NW Expressway and Council Wednesday afternoon.

The 3-year-old boy did not survive and his mom and 4-year-old brother were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

Investigators are calling it a terrible accident but some McDonald’s customers call the parking lot notoriously dangerous and say the accident could have been prevented.

Suella Hill knows this McDonald’s very well. She says it’s chaotic.

“You got cars trying to pass by each other,” says Hill. “You got cars trying to back out.”

Drivers are speeding.

“They don’t just pull around, they shoot around,” says Hill.

On top of all of that, a few years back McDonald’s extended their play area creating a blind corner.

“It made it worse,” says Hill. “There’s a blind spot when you pull around that corner there’s nothing you can see. You’re going to hit whoever is coming out that door.”

Around and around, investigators drove the corner in the black SUV to see for themselves.

No stop sign, no yield sign and there wasn’t even a pedestrian crossing sign until employees put one up after the accident.

Hill says that’s not enough. Something has to change.

Hill says, “A life that has been taken, shouldn’t have been taken.”

We did reach out to McDonald’s to see if they have any plans for that blind corner other than a pedestrian crossing sign. We are still waiting on a response.

Meanwhile, the driver of that black SUV has not been charged with a crime, again police are saying what happened Wednesday was an accident.
