3D printing capabilities are playing a big role in the medical field

OKLAHOMA CITY – Many people have seen a 3D movie, with glasses and images popping out at you.  Now, picture a 3D printer, just about anything can be made into a physical object using different materials and this technology plays a significant role in the medical field.

Senior Vice President of Sales with Standley Systems, Brian Peltier said, “Dentists use this technology to build their crowns, their bridges, any kind of dental work.”

Standley Systems has more than 100 materials they can print with like plastic, metal and colorful gypsum.

Peltier said, “Think of a very thin layer of material being laid down and glue being applied to make the image appear, very thin microscopic layers of material build up and become whatever the image is.”

Doctors use 3D models for surgery practice and medical researches print replicas to study cells, molecules and even the MRI data.

At the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) researchers are constantly looking for causes and cures of diseases like cancer, lupus and Alzheimer’s.

Ben Fowler with OMRF said, “We’ll print out models and then we’ll study the same models for months and months at a time. Then it will take months to make changes, and then we’ll do it again.”

Both Fowler and Peltier said 3D printing is growing significantly and they won’t be surprised if they eventually become a staple in people’s homes like paper printers.

Fowler said, “New things that we can’t even think of it are going to come out, emerge and we’re going to have new functionality.”

3D printers can also make pre-historical animals, prosthetics to match the human and more.
