Cat lovers unite for a ‘puurrrfest’ festival downtown this weekend

OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s undeniable. Cat videos are some of the most popular on the internet.

Now one downtown attraction is hoping to get in on the feline frenzy for the Internet Cat Video Festival

Search the words ‘cat videos’ on YouTube, and you’ll get 5.6 million results.

Humans have an appetite for all things kitty related, but what is the appeal?

“That you don’t have to take care of them,” an OKC resident said.

“They just kind of take care of themselves. Just let them go. Inside or outside. It doesn’t really matter.”

“I have no clue. They do funny stuff I guess,” one OKC resident said.

But the Myriad Gardens thinks they know why kitty videos are like cat nip for feline fanatics.

“Cats are mysterious creatures. They kind of tend to get their way, and when they maybe slip or fall or get scared it just makes you laugh and people love to laugh,” Leslie Spears with the Myriad Gardens said.

That’s why they’re kicking off an internet cat video festival this weekend ending with a 75 minute screening of the world’s best cat videos from the past year.

“We’ve got the cat people, but…there’s another group of people who maybe they don’t like cats, which I can’t imagine, but they like to watch the videos,” Spears said.

Local food trucks, cat products and cat face painting will be available.

“People can come dressed in cat attire. We recommend it will make you more uninhibited and into the whole spirit,” Spears said.

The Internet Cat Video Festival kicks off at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 26. It’s free and open to the public.
