After freshman running back Joe Mixon’s incident on campus corner on Friday, August 25, three running backs look like they will likely get the bulk of the carries this year on the University of Oklahoma’s football team.
Mixon was a five-star, all-everything recruit sought after by a who’s who of national college football powers.
While visiting the ESPN campus on July 23, before Mixon’s incident happened, Bob Stoops told Colin Cowherd on his radio show that there was a chance Mixon could start at running back.
The Oklahoma athletics’ website has not updated the team’s depth chart since December 20, 2013.
Running backs Brennan Clay, Damian Williams and Roy Finch all moved on from the team after the 2013 season.
The trio combined for 2,814 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns, despite Damian Williams being kicked off the team after nine games.
Keith Ford and Alex Ross return to Norman for the 2014 season as the only running backs with game experience.
Keith Ford is a true sophomore from Texas, he rushed the ball 23 times for 134 yards and a touchdown in 2013.
Alex Ross, a redshirt sophomore from Jenks, rushed the ball three times for 19 yards during the 2013 season.
Samaje Perine is a true freshman back from Pflugerville, Texas where he rushed for nearly 1,500 yards at Hendrickson High School during his senior season.
Several Sooners coaches and players have praised Perine’s strength and work out before the start of fall camp.
