‘World’s largest proficiency air rally’ hits Oklahoma skies this weekend
OKLAHOMA CITY – Thirty pilots from throughout Oklahoma will take off this Saturday to support women in aviation as the Oklahoma Chapter of the Ninety-Nines hosts the 36th Annual Okie Derby.
Participants in the daytime event will fly up to 200 nautical miles over the Oklahoma City area in a contest to determine which pilot can most accurately predict fuel use and flight time projections. The winner will receive 100 gallons of fuel from Sundance Airport.
Okie Derby is the world’s largest proficiency air rally.
In addition to the mid-air activities, the Okie Derby will host events on the ground for aviation lovers.
Spectators will be able to track rally participants in real time as the airplanes fly over the city, and Sundance Flight Academy staff will be on hand to answer questions about flight programs and aviation scholarships.
Proceeds from this year’s derby will fund one $5,000 scholarship for a woman seeking a pilot’s license.
Since 1990, the Okie Derby has generated more than $85,000 for funds for aviation scholarships.
