Update: OKC Zoo announces the name of their newest baby gorilla

UPDATE: 9/3/2014 – The Oklahoma City Zoo announced the name of their newest baby gorilla.

According to the OKC Zoo, the Great EscApe team has selected the name, Kamina , in honor of her father, Togo.

Kamina is a town in the country of Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Zoo recently welcomed an adorable new addition.

The baby Western lowland female gorilla was born in the early hours of Saturday, August 16 inside a Great EscApe day room to mother Ndjole and father Togo.

According to the Oklahoma City Zoo, the baby gorilla weighed a little more than four pounds at birth and appears healthy and strong.

Unfortunately, Ndjole has not demonstrated any signs of maternal care towards her baby since giving birth.  The Zoo’s veterinarian team and gorilla keepers have made the decision to hand rear the infant.

“Ndjole was given several opportunities to bond with her baby within the first 24 hours and didn’t show any interest in her, putting the newborn’s life at risk,” said OKC Zoo Veterinarian Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino.

The OKC Zoo says they will provide around-the-clock care for the infant gorilla in an off-exhibit area, but their goal is to reunite the infant with other gorillas as soon as possible.
