Famous giant tortoise ‘Pepe the Missionary’ dies at age 60

One of the Ecuador’s most famous reptiles had died.

A giant tortoise known as “Pepe the Missionary” died of natural causes at his home in the Galapagos National Park on Thursday.

Pepe, who was from the rare Chelonodis Becki species, was around 60-years-old.

He was one of the most photographed tortoises in the Galapagos and had become a symbol of the islands that helped inspire Charles Darwin’s ideas on evolution.

Pepe was found by fishermen in the 1940s.

In 1967, he was given to Franciscan Missionaries on the island who renamed him “Pepe the Missionary.”
