Do you have sleep drunkenness?
If you wake up so confused that you answer the phone instead of turning off the alarm, you may have a sleep disorder called “sleep drunkenness.”
A study of nearly 20,000 adults suggests the condition could affect as many as 1 in 7 people.
Sleep experts say symptoms can range from the benign, like answering the phone when you wake up, to even violent or inappropriate behavior upon waking.
The Stanford University School of Medicine study says 84 percent of cases occurred in people who have other sleep disorders or who are taking antidepressants.
“Sleep drunkenness” is more common in people with depression, bipolar disorder, alcoholism or anxiety.
