Scientists at Stanford University may have discovered a new, and potentially safer, painkiller.

The doctors have been researching links between alcohol consumption and heart health when they realized an enzyme they’d been working with may play a critical role in pain reduction.

The work is still preliminary and done using lab mice.

But the researchers say the compound appears to be non-addictive and now carry the same heart and bleeding risks that other painkillers do.
