Scientists at Stanford University may have discovered a new and potentially safer painkiller.

The doctors had been researching links between alcohol consumption and heart health when they realized an enzyme they had been working with may play a critical role in pain reduction.

The work is still in the preliminary stages.

The researchers say the compound appears to be non-addictive and doesn’t carry the same heart and bleeding risks that other painkillers do.
